1. Indiana is called the Hoosier state, and residents are properly called Hoosiers (not Indianians. Please not that).
2. The official state sport is basketball .
3. Indiana is sixteenth in the nation for both population and density.
4. The state's 1816 constitution was the first in the country to institute a state-funded public school system. (It didn't work very well, because at the time the state couldn't provide those funds. A later state constitution worked out better.)
5. The official state song is "On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away." Waterways flow into the Wabash River in about 2/3 of the state's counties.
6. 2016 is the state's bicentennial year; however, we were not invited to any celebratory festivities while we were there.
