6 fun facts about Florida

1. Ponce de Leon named the place we call Florida  la Florida, when he sited the eastern coast the peninsula on April 2, 1513 (during the Spanish celebration of Pascua Florida.)

2. Florida has around 74 million citrus trees under cultivation. 90% of the orange juice sold in the United States comes from Florida. The first citrus trees were planted near St Augustine in the 1500s by Spanish explorers.

3. Noplace in Florida is more than 60 miles from a beach, and the state has the most miles of coastline in the contiguous United States (Alaska has almost five times as much).

4. Key West has the highest average temperature in the United States

5. The Everglades, a region of  tropical wetlands in southern Florida, is the only region in the world where alligators and crocodiles coexist.

6. The longest fishing pier in the world extends 1.5 miles into Tampa Bay on the old Sunshine Skyway bridge.
